Artist Statement
I find myself drawn to the mystery of life. In my works I allow a space for the creation to take form almost on its own, by using small pieces and repeating them, allowing them to grow like organic matter. I tend to industrial materials as they lend themselves well to the repetition. This in turn creates an interesting contrast between the essence of the final work and the materials used to make it. There are two catalyst for my creations. First is the wonder of nature then come come the puzzles I give myself in which the work is the answer. The answer often leading me back to my own natural world. Finally, I find a meditative peace in the repetition of constructing the works similar to the quiet in nature. The result of all these ideas coming together are my sculptures.
Biography
My current artistic journey has taken me to sculpture. I work is primarily in metals, I find the duality between heated fluid metal and the solid strength of cold metal fascinating. I thrive on the contrast between the industrial nature of my materials and the organic forms of my outcomes. Many of my current works evolve as a means for me to solve problems I set up for myself. The sculptures are the answers. Having made this turn, I also find myself exploring my roots with my photography. I recently discovered through my photography the consistent vision that flows in all of my works.
My focus is on continuing the advancement of my career in sculpture. I am the founder of A40 Collective, A Mother’s Art Collective. I have been part of numerous shows throughout California and have public installations in Orinda, CA. My work is also in private collections. I teach art, preschool through high school, with the Dare 2 Dream program in the Bayview Hunter’s Point neighborhood as well as being involved in community programming with the Bayview Opera House.
Going back further, my background in the arts began when I was very young. My parents could not keep me in enough art supplies growing up. I graduated from Fairfax Visual Arts Magnet High School in Los Angeles, and continued my art education at the University of California, San Diego earning my BA in visual arts with a media production focus. I have received awards from the Parson School of Design in photography and I have works in the permanent photography collections of UCSD. I have enjoyed a very active commercial career in the media arts in film, television, and photography spanning 20 years prior to shifting to the fine arts and sculpture.
